Thanks to the artist Silverleaf, we know that you can achieve a lot with just a few small adjustments and simply freshen up WoW's stale appearance. Meanwhile, there are countless fan projects that deal with the gameplay, design or graphics of the popular online role-playing game. Class-specific traditional armor, race designs, and redesigns of classic cities like Orgrimmar and Stormwind, as well as areas like the mystical Grizzly Hills, are just a few examples.

One approach, however, has a particular appeal to the fan audience: using the power of the Unreal Engine 4 to make the comic-book-like world of World of Warcraft (buy now €14.99 ) seem more real and alive by adding more detail and depth. Thanks to Mike Marra, an artist who works with Unreal Engine 4, we now get the first small preview of the realistic version of Hellfire Peninsula, the first area of The Burning Crusade. However, the short trailer doesn't only show a desolate stone desert, but also the gloomy Hellfire Citadel and other ruins that line the eerie path of glory. The grim Hellfire Citadel is the silent witness to the dark era of the Orcs of Draenor, when Kil'jaeden and the Burning Legion hunted the draenei across the universe. Using the demon blood of the pit lord Mannoroth, the Legion enslaved the orcs, ravaging their idyllic homeland and committing horrific crimes against the draenei.

With the Unreal Engine, the remains of the fortress and the barren landscape of Hellfire Peninsula appear even more sinister than in the original. Even the skies with alien planets and magical starways look less colorful, but all the more menacing.
