Last week, dataminers had made an exciting discovery that pointed to a hardcore variant for the first season of the championship of WoW Classic. Now the Blizzard developers confirm with the latest build for the beta of "Classic Fresh" that exactly such a hardcore mode will come.
In detail, the developers write in the patch notes: Guardians of the High Elves have appeared in Ironforge and Undercity to find those willing to endure the "Soul of Iron." And indeed, you can already talk to NPCs on the beta servers. For example, Chronicler Morta is standing in the Apothecarium, near the Herbology teacher.

This one wants to tell the stories of heroes who know no defeat. Of those heroes who, from the first step to the last, travel their path unbroken, with a soul as strong as iron. And of course Morta asks us if we want to follow this path. As soon as we confirm this request, we celebrate the challenge with an emote and an iron-colored aura. In addition, we receive the buff "Soul of Iron", which marks us for the hardcore mode, and the ability "Soul of Iron", with which we can always flex a bit (see lead image, cooldown 1 minute).
However, the optional hardcore mode is not really hardcore (yet?!). As soon as a character with a "Soul of Iron" buff dies, his iron soul falls out of him. But he can resurrect himself normally. In that case, he is "only" freed from said buff and branded with the "Tarnished Soul" debuff, which reduces all stats by 1 percent (apparently not stackable by further deaths).

With just mentioned chronicle NPCs, you can then even be freed from the burden and continue to play the character normally.
