While (almost) all eyes are on the new areas, talent trees and Dracthyr after the announcement of the new WoW expansion, frequent wavers and potential returnees are wondering: will the leveling phase change with the release of Dragonflight? It should be clear that the developers aren't planning a fundamental overhaul of the old zones like they did with Cataclysm. But what will happen to Shadowlands and Chromie Time?

New players start on the island, veterans choose via chromie time

The short answer to this question is: Hardly anything will change. Senior Quest Designer Jackie Wiley and Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, among others, confirmed this in an interview with Blizzplanet. Basically, players will still be able to use Chromie Time to level their characters in Dragonflight. The leveling phase via the feature will last from level 1 to 60 with the new expansion in the future, which means that we can additionally choose Shadowlands content for leveling a character.

The leveling experience for new players and characters will otherwise remain almost untouched. Wiley commented,
"[...] new players will be sent from the Isle of Banishment to BFA and then to the Dragon Isles. More experienced players, those who have max-leveled at least one character, can use Chromie Time to level up in Draneor or Pandaria or Shadowlands, for example. But for new players, it's going to the Isle of the Banished, to BFA, to the Dragon Isles. "

So if you're brand new to WoW (buy now )

or returning to the game and you don't have a character leveled to max, you'll start on the Isle of the Banished, level up through Battle for Azeroth, and then you can dive into the new Dragonflight content. Ion Hazzikostas once again explicitly confirmed that Shadowlands will be available as an expansion in Chromie Time for the leveling phase. No more leveling phase at some point? Hazzikostas: "We're talking about it"

In addition, Hazzikostas emphasized that the developers are aware of the fact that the maximum level might reach a triple-digit number again at some point:
"[...] we know that in 2030 or so we'll be back in the triple-digit range, and what that means and how we can prevent the same problems from happening again. [...] I think I'd like to come up with a perfect solution to that at some point. We've definitely toyed with the idea of what it would look like to add no levels or fewer levels with an expansion, but levels give us and any RPG so much, there's a reason they've stood the test of time, and they're just a straightforward path to more power, new stuff to look forward to, now new talent points, and so to say we're going to stop doing that would raise a lot of questions that we need to find satisfactory answers for, but we'll keep talking about it."
